The Hyblaean Mountains represent the carsic mountain plateau of southeast Sicily. Erosion, over millions of years, has created an amazing system of canyons and gorges that today constitute an area of outstanding natural value as well as a treasure chest of biodiversity. The numerous streams that flow down from the Cave, as they are known locally, create natural swimming pools filled with energising waters where it is possible to swim during the tour!
Man has always lived in these places due to their impassable and easily defendable nature.
Such is the case of Noto Antica, or ‘Ancient Noto’, a medieval town that rises up from the Cava del Carosello plain. The famous earthquake of 1693 destroyed the town and devastated a large part of the western side of the island. Noto was totally rebuilt from scratch, in the Baroque style, and today it is the symbol of Baroque architecture in southwest Sicily.
After the visit to the ruins of Noto Antica, we’ll head to the valley of the Asinaro stream where we will be able to take an energising break in a natural swimming pool. The day will end with a brief visit to Baroque Noto, rebuilt following the earthquake.
